How innovative is Google Wave?

It's just a synthesis of existing apps, but that in itself is very innovative
I don't think it's quite as revolutionary as they seemed to want to imply – it's just pulling together a bunch of features currently scattered between various existing webapps. But by synthesising those features so nicely with lovely Google simplicity and then throwing in open source extensibility, I think they've created a killer app.

Wave's open protocol is very innovative
The ability for developers to build apps around Wave will be revolutionary. This a major shift from Google's previous strategies.
