Should congressional/parliamentary debate be moved to a written online forum?
It wouldn't be a standard forum where anyone could comment. It would just be for elected representatives, but it would be publicly accessible. Maybe there could be a 'shadow' forum where anyone could comment on the representatives' posts, but that's a separate issue.
Are 'in-person' debating chambers one of those things that nobody has realized is obsolete yet, because everyone takes it for granted?
Representatives:
- would be able to enter and leave the debate when they have the opportunity
- would not have to sit through things that aren't relevant to them
- can read text quicker than than the speed at which people talk
Therefore they would have more time to spend on getting things done and understanding their constituents' needs.
Obviously it would be great for deaf people, and blind people would be able to use screenreading technology to go through debates very quickly.
In in-person debates, only one person can express him/herself at a time.
People think more about what they write than what they say, and they can for back and edit and rephrase things if they think better of it.
If you're watching a video or live speech, it's difficult to scan through and get to the parts you're interested in.
