Why does George Monbiot dismiss claims that 9/11 was a setup by the US government?

George Monbiot is radically cynical about the US government (and the governments of the UK and most Western nations for that matter) yet he denouces the "9/11 was a setup" theory as conspiracy theory nonsense: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/feb/20/comment.september11

Some pro-setup people say he must be in the pay of corporate/government masters. What do you think?

Because he looked into the arguments and counter-arguments of both sides

It's very easy for an argument to seem highly convincing if you only hear one side. Well-made videos know how to press people's emotional buttons. Seemingly irrefutable arguments only seem irrefutable because opposing arguments aren't accurately presented, experts are quoted without mentioning that most other experts in the same field disagree, theories, misinterpretations and gossip are presented as hard fact.

Because he didn't really look at the arguments and counter-arguments of both sides.

I don't know whether this is the correct answer, but I stated it as a possible answer to be considered.   Most people are like this, not willing to open up to the possibility of corruption, and therefore closed to considering alternatives to the official story.  It is easy for people to delude themselves, especially when people in authority actively support that delusion.

If anyone (why do we care what George's opinion is anyway, other than as a prototypical political bureaucrat for purpose of illustration) in a public position of responsibility makes a claim without having done due diligence to really, honestly, scientifically determine whether it is true, they could be charged with being negligent, irresponsible, and dishonoring themselves and the office they hold.

I am willing to bet that anyone who does honestly look into the facts of 9/11 will soon accept, at the very least, that the official story is not supported by the facts, and that the huge number of unanswered questions should therefore make it obvious we need a new independent real investigation.
